This is probably the most personal song on AON. 'Tree' began its life as a poem, but I always felt it was a song hiding inside the poem. Over the years I tried a few times to find the right chords and melody, but I never quite reached the place it needed to be.
Of all the poems I have written, 'Tree' is the one that seemed to touch people the most. I heard more than a few I really like that comments, and my dad loved it. I read it at his funeral in Glasgow on the 2nd May 2025. A week or so later, I was flicking through YouTube and came across a performance by Aurora, singing Runaway, a song I've always really liked. Something clicked. I knew instantly that this was the style and emotional space 'Tree' had been waiting for.
I went back to the poem, reshaped the structure into a more song type structure and just let the melody rise through it. The full song came together in about an hour. Sometimes a person or a moment unlocks something you did not realise was ready. Inspiration does that. It kinda lifts you to a level you maybe couldn't reach on your own.
'Tree' is a very dear song to me. It carries memory, loss, and something gentler too, a sense of continuation. I'm genuinely excited to give it to someone for AON: THE GATHERING. It'll mean a great deal to watch another artist interpret it without the emotional connection I've carried for years, through the poem and now through the song.
It's a piece of my heart, and I hope it becomes a piece of other people's too.

Chorus
On a spot near the middle,
where the solar storms run,
though it's hard to believe,
there's a tree on the sun.
Verse 1
It's been there ninety eons;
some convinced even more,
and it's perfectly shaped,
rooted firm to the core.
Chorus
On a spot near the middle,
where the solar storms run,
though it's hard to believe,
there's a tree on the sun.
Verse 2
It grew like a rumour,
in the magnetic field,
defying all logic,
whilst supplying a yield,
of fruits for the Gods,
in a plentiful harvest.
Swaying peacefully calm,
nourished daily by stardust.
Chorus
On a spot near the middle,
where the solar storms run,
though it's hard to believe,
there's a tree on the sun.
Verse 3
Proud and resplendent,
with its lime-green persona,
it shields and protects,
from the red-hot corona.
Whispering sweet little nothings,
to the stars shooting by,
living life for the moment,
knowing moments will die.
Outro Chorus
On a spot near the middle,
where the solar storms run,
though it's hard to believe,
there's a tree on the sun.
